It's been an exhausting year with the world and my country in such a mess (& that's putting it mildly). I have turned to simple comfort in media, books, food & art projects to put some positivity in my life. That's one reason I enjoy your podcast--it's fun, educational & positive.

I have been watching feel good series on PBS such as Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and All Creatures Great & Small.

Audiobooks have entered my life as I work on projects and have revisited several Barbara Kingsolver books. She is one of my favorite authors. Also, I've never watched Game of Thorns but have gotten hooked on the audiobook series.

Food this winter has been all about comfort food--homemade soups, stews and home baked bread. Tell me, is anything better that fresh bread just out of the oven with butter and a hot steaming cup of coffee or tea.

Keep doing what you are doing. It's a bright spot in my week.

Thank you so much for your recommendations and your kind words about the podcast! We are of course *loving* this season of Finding Your Roots. (Henry Louis Gates Jr. is one of our heroes.) And I completely agree that freshly baked bread is the best!

Find Your Roots to the max!! The episode with Lavar Burton—is there anything more moving? I will admit, too, that I put on Lavar Burton Reads almost every night before bed. I love short stories and sci-fi both, and I read neither form nor genre enough, so it’s a lovely way to get a leg up on both.

I finally saw All Of Us Strangers last night, and it took my breath away. And we’re watching Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. (Thanks for bringing it to my attention!) Would love to dish with you all about the James Baldwin episode—I’m conflicted. But still, Tom Hollander is a revelation (no surprise), and it’s refreshing to see older women in complex roles that don’t sap them of their sexuality.

And I’ll echo kde on homemade soup and bread (and the podcast, which always brings me joy)—how else can one bear the winter? I’ve also been experimenting a bit with pastry—I made a mushroom wellington with homemade puff pastry the other day and damn. If it hadn’t taken me all day, I’d do it again tomorrow!

Ramble concluded!

That LeVar Burton episode was SO good! He's another one of my most cherished heroes. I'll have to check out LeVar Burton Reads (I adore his voice).

I've always loved Andrew Scott too . . . his performance in All of Us Strangers was heartbreakingly good. Glad you're watching Feud: Capote vs. The Swans! We will definitely have to talk about that particular episode though (I suspect I share your concerns).

And mushroom wellington with homemade puff pastry!?! Yum! Send me the recipe!

Well, here in the northwest, it’s crab season. And I am enjoying as much crab as I can stuff into my face. In Oregon it’s much cheaper than in Seattle.

I can go get a whole crab fresh off the boat for $15. I also went to a seafood wine and music festival on the Oregon coast So that has been my indulgence this month.

I loved your book recommendations. And I will take your suggestion when traveling to eat what is fresh and local.

We love crab!!! We actually just had an amazing crab salad and crab sushi rolls from a new restaurant that opened up around the corner from us!

And the seafood and wine music festival sounds amazing!
