I'll start the dinner party conversation this week! After much indecision (there are so many film directors I love), I decided to pick a living director whose work I absolutely adore. And one of my favorite directors is definitely Ava DuVernay. From Selma (one of my favorite films) to 13th (one of my favorite documentaries), When They See Us (one of my favorite miniseries) to Queen Sugar (my favorite TV show of all time), Ava DuVernay's work always astounds me. And I simply cannot wait to see her new film, Origin!

This is definitely a tough one but I have to go with one of my favorite directors of all time and that's Federico Fellini. From Satyricon to Juliet of the Spirits to 8 1/2, he never gets old to me. He's actually one of the few directors whose films I can watch repeatedly and I'm always surprised by something new. A genius of cinema!

Couldn't agree more. Felllini is undoubtedly one of the greatest. I love every film you named. Plus La Strada, Nights of Cabiria, La Dolce Vita, Roma, Amarcord . . . what a profound filmography.

Fellini! Well, goes without saying. I have to see Satyricon again. It's been ages.

Ouchie! This is a tough call for naming favorite directors. Seems to be the case here in other comments. Well, I'll shoot from the hip with three off the top.

Well, four.

David Lynch

Roman Polanski

Jordan Peele

Ken Russell

Two more directors we both love!

A little hit or miss, but so many of Alan Parker's films--The Commitments, Angel Heart--are stellar and, more importantly, re-watchable.

Great choice! I haven't seen Angel Heart (adding that to the list), but The Commitments, Mississippi Burning, Birdy, Midnight Express, Fame, Pink Floyd – The Wall, Angela's Ashes . . . all fantastic and also completely different from one another. He's certainly directed a very impressive catalog of excellent films.

You must watch--if only for the scene in which Robert De Niro peels a hard-boiled egg.

I love Jane Campion! I almost chose her. The Piano just might be my favorite film of all time. And then there's An Angel at My Table, Bright Star, The Power of the Dog . . . yet another cinematic genius.
