Thank you! So glad you liked the playlist! Song to the Siren NEVER ceases to have the same impact on me when I hear it.
You have the same birthday as Edith! We both love Piaf and I've been listening to her since I was an infant. My grandfather was a DJ during WW2 and he became obsessed with Piaf and now I own his enormous Piaf vinyl collection.
And our friend Maria here in Paris has an apartment in the building where Edif Piaf lived! You can visit her apartment/museum, actually!
Completely agree about Elizabeth Fraser! Thank you so much for choosing her as one of your favorite female musicians. (We love any excuse to talk about her angelic voice!)
And I'm pretty sure there's an Edith Piaf song on next Wednesday's Mid-Week playlist!
I am honored you chose two of my recommendations for this podcast. Also, the Earthsea series is one of my favorite reads that I re-read every once in a while--it just makes me feel good
My favorite French thing is Paris. There is so much art, history, culture to explore. It's a truly aesthetic arrest experience every time I have had the good fortune to visit this amazing place.
Françoise Hardy. I am obsessed and in love with her. I have been studying French for a year, i have never tried to learn something like a language, but i am driven by my love for this iconic singer!
Au Revoir Les Enfants is one of my all-time favorite films. Louis Malle is an incredible choice! And crepes . . . which we are having for breakfast tomorrow!
J'adore Louis Malle! Elevator to the Gallows (with Jeanne Moreau and that incredible score by Miles Davis) is another one of my favorites. And then there's Murmur of the Heart!!! *gay gasp*
They are quintessentially French. I would smoke two for nostalgia, but if I did I'd need an un-affordable bottle of Champagne with that, in which case I would smoke the whole pack as I consumed the whole bottle. I'm happy you know about Gitanes. I learned about the via David Bowie- who else?!
Hahahaha!!!! Ask Gitane if she knows me without telling her who I am! I went to a show of hers in the eighties. She was doing a Billie Holiday tribute and I could swear it was Billie singing, that's how good she was. But, if she says she doesn't know me, please, hog tie her with duct tape and blister her ass and say it's from me ;)
I don't smoke anymore since 2017. But' before I quit, I was THRILLED that I could find Gitanes here in Spain.
LOL! I guess I am more of a Francophile than I thought. I left a lot out. This podcast served as an introspection and catharsis of a sort. Thanks for this. You guys are awesome and devilshly delightful.
Since when do you have to "work" on being devilshly delightful, huh? (Archie Bunker fart sound at Edith) all you guys do is enjoy each others company and have fun exposing us to things some of us have never heard of. Okay, that's the work part. But, making me / us, laugh, grin and listen needs no toil in my opinion. ("humble," intentionally excluded for authenticity)
Okay, and I’m SO delighted that you enjoyed and recommended Dead Ringers (I love the film too!) and Severance. Given that you two basically dictate my own viewing choices these days, I’m thrilled I was able to give something back. You’re the best!
Loved your viewing recommendations (we totally binged them both)! And Ryan and I are both *completely enjoying* our mutual exchange of great recommendations with you and Chris!
So glad you're a part of our community! And thanks for the recommendation! We're absolutely loving Ivalas Quartet and their entire mission to diversify the classical repertoire. Can't wait for them to release a full-length album.

Shit! I had in mind Piaf, but didn't type it in! Slap ma fro!

Even with all that's going on here right now, there's still no place like Paris.
Indeed. After four days we already have so much to talk about!
Thank you for your excellent recommendations! And I completely agree that the Earthsea books are a perfect comfort read.
Françoise Hardy. I am obsessed and in love with her. I have been studying French for a year, i have never tried to learn something like a language, but i am driven by my love for this iconic singer!
Oh my gosh, yes!!! I love her too. And France Gall. Delightful!
J'adore Françoise Hardy! She really is brilliant. Such a unique style.
Great choice! And a wonderful reason to learn French!
Well, I just rewatched My Dinner with Andre the other night, so I’ll say Louis Malle...and crepes.
Au Revoir Les Enfants is one of my all-time favorite films. Louis Malle is an incredible choice! And crepes . . . which we are having for breakfast tomorrow!

Although I no longer smoke, I still crave a pack of Gitanes now and then. Some things are just so French!
Just bought our friend Ida two cartons at the Duty Free to bring to her in Paris! They're 11 euros a pack here!!!
My mention was kismet!

Hahaha! It was actually ONE of your favorite French things...LOL
But honestly, I LOVE every single thing you listed. I don't smoke Gitanes but I have dear friend who is named Gitane... Thank you, Del Mar!
Hahahaha!!!! Ask Gitane if she knows me without telling her who I am! I went to a show of hers in the eighties. She was doing a Billie Holiday tribute and I could swear it was Billie singing, that's how good she was. Hahaha!!! Will do! And I know for a fact that she knows who you are!
You are a francophile, obviously! And thank you, we're always working on our devilishly delightful skills!

What a great list! I love so many things on this list! I especially enjoy all the great French writers you chose, including several of my favorites.
Okay, and I’m SO delighted that you enjoyed and recommended Dead Ringers (I love the film too!) and Severance. Given that you two basically dictate my own viewing choices these days, I’m thrilled I was able to give something back. You’re the best!
Thank you for turning us on to it! We were glued to it and Rachel Weisz, I can't. She's such a phenomenal actress.
Loved your viewing recommendations (we totally binged them both)! And Ryan and I are both *completely enjoying* our mutual exchange of great recommendations with you and Chris!
You make me love the Ivalas Quartet even more! So many wonderful recommendations from your community here. Thank you for curating and sharing. 🥂
