It wasn't Joey Bishop, it was Foster Brooks! I mixed up my Rat Pack roasters. *slaps head* (In my defense, they were all drunk, but Foster Brooks was by far the best at playing drunk.)
Watch the hilarious Foster Brooks here (and feel free to follow with a Youtube deep dive):
Foster Brooks was so hilarious, and very good at playing a drunk for somebody who was allegedly sober? I'm not clear abut that. But, his belching out a word or retching mid-sentence was GOLDEN! However, Dean Martin, had his own thing going as the straight man. He was even funnier on guest shows- Johnny Carson to name one, with George Gobel, where Dean is sitting off to his side, flicking his cigarette ashes into Gobel's drink and on his suit. If you haven't seen that one, I urge you to. It's sooo wrong it's hilarious.
You're right! I think Foster Brooks was the only one at those Roasts who *wasn't* actually drunk. He apparently never touched alcohol and it was all just a brilliant comedic persona. Love Deano too! (Did you ever see that weird nude/homoerotic photo shoot he did with Jerry Lewis? Would love to know the whole Hollywood Babylon story behind that one!) We will definitely have to check out that Tonight Show clip with George Gobel!
No, I don't think I saw that photo shoot. In the documentaries I've seen, I always suspected some gay undertones about their behavior in their friendship. Then again, back then, was it safe to presume that this kind of closeness was found among Italian / Jewish immigrant children on the east coast? I was never quite sure about this. Men kissing in the old world Italian, was common and not frowned upon when delivered appropriately.
It appears that several members of the Rat Pack were gay or bisexual. (I think Sammy Davis Jr. was the only one who was open about it, though there were rather credible rumors about a few others.) Then there was a recent Dean Martin documentary that *heavily* implied Jerry Lewis was in love with him. As for that particular photo shoot, let's just say the photographic evidence . . . can't be *unseen* once you've seen it. I'm sure it was a joke of some kind, but they sure took the joke *very* far and I still have no idea what was actually going on behind the scenes there. There's another documentary idea!
OMG, I totally remember that moment with Dean Martin and George Gobel on Carson! Those Dean Martin roasts were everything, right? LaWanda Page and Ruth Buzzi and Rickles, I mean c'mon!
Right? And Redd Foxx, Rich Little, Phyllis Diller, Jonathan Winters, Flip Wilson . . . and remember those bizarre moments with Orson Welles?!?! It was always an amazing lineup. I wasn't even alive when most of these roasts initially aired (born in 1978), but I think I've since watched them ALL. Hours of entertainment. (And probably some of my favorite content on Youtube.)
My favorite drink, well two are not as exotic as Ouzo, which grew hair on my chest- when I was young, of course. Whoever had hair on their chest at four years old?!
I don't drink often, my body isn't liking it as much. But, in this order, my two faves are: 1. Manhattan Cocktail, with a single grain Rye whiskey, sometimes Maker's Mark, bitters and Carpano Antica red vermouth from Italy- which by itself, is a drink! stirred, not shaken, straight up. Number 2, is the Cosmopolitan with Stoli and cranberry & a twist of lime. Since watching Rosemary's Baby a thousand times, I am intrigued by Vodka Blush. I never looked it up, I have no idea if it's a real cocktail or not.
Congratulations on your 1-year anniversary. You have given me hours of entertaining & educational enjoyment. I am looking forward to watching & listening to all your links on today's podcast.
Thanks for featuring Hannah Hoch. She was amazing and a trailblazer. Love, love her work esp. her dolls. Pamela Colman Smith--who knew? I've admired her tarot deck, but had no idea of her back story. There is definitely more to be discovered.
And Carol Burnett--every time I think about her skit playing Scarlett from Gone With the Wind where she comes down the staircase in the dress made of velvet curtains that still has the curtain rod in the shoulders, I can't help but laugh.
My favorite cocktail on a hot summer afternoon is a simple Tom Collins.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We were likewise grateful for the Hannah Höch and Pamela Colman Smith recommendations last week . . . two amazing artists who definitely deserve a dedicated documentary! And you'll have to watch the whole Carol Burnett special on Youtube . . . turns out that iconic curtain rod dress (designed by Bob Mackie by the way) is now in the Smithsonian!
Thank you for all of your continued support in what we're doing. It really makes it all worthwhile. We're aiming to keep the ball rolling along in our second year.
And thank you for recommending Hannah Höch! I was so inspired looking back over her work this week. Such a brilliant trailblazing artist.
I so enjoyed this podcast. Carol Burnett, who would’ve thought you’d cover Carol Burnett! many of us grew up watching her with our parents on Sat. Nights.
I love how you love appreciate every generation, every era where someone touches your aesthetic sensibilities. You get me to listen to things I would not have listened to otherwise.
Your enthusiasm is so contagious! Waiting for the day for you two to be famous! ❤️
Thank you so much, Cheryl! And thank you for all of your inspiration, your support, your affirmation and your love. We both treasure you immeasurably. So pleased that you're feeling the Aesthetic Arrest! Love you, R&R
Your comment means so much to us, Cheryl! Thank you for your kind words. You totally get what we're doing and why. (And isn't Carol Burnett wonderful? We've both worshiped her since we were kids.)

And on a related note, my favorite cocktail is a Metaxa Sidecar made by Ryan Wildstar!
I'm not sure if I was doing Foster Brooks or just doing Dean Martin!

YES! That's the doc I saw recently! This is the one that sort of clued me in about some aspects of their friendship.
Carson show that was almost destroyed by Dean Martin.

Thanks! This has immediately been added to tonight's viewing queue!

Like the Carol Burnett show, they never get old. I still laugh every time. Such talent!
My favorite cocktail might have to be a Grape Nehi!
Your Grape Nehi is definitely in my top three! (Along with your signature Lemon Drop of course!)
My favorite drink, well two are not as exotic as Ouzo, which grew hair on my chest- when I was young, of course. Whoever had hair on their chest at four years old?!

A Vodka Blush, yes! Vodka, rosemary, lime juice and grenadine! Funnily enough, I almost called my "Louzo" cocktail a "Rosemary's Baby!"
AHA! It looked like red wine with vodka in the movie. It's grenadine.
My favorite cocktail is a Dark & Stormy, like my personality. 😆 Dark rum and ginger beer served over ice and garnished with lime.
Hahaha! I love a good Dark & Stormy. And I would have thought Sex on the Beach would fit your personality!
Not that you couldn't start with a Dark & Stormy and then immediately move on to Sex on the Beach!
😆😆 If they had a sex on the beach after the best sushi of my life, that would be me.
Those Dean roasts were my favorite and didn't pull any punches. Don Rickles was relentless.
