You saw Roxy Music live?!? Amazing. We saw Bryan Ferry and his orchestra about ten years ago. Such a great show. But seeing Roxy Music is definitely on our bucket list.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It was indeed an event full of beauty and love and hearing Flowers at the end of it all definitely turned on the waterworks. I'm also pleased that Bowie loved Rozz's cover of "Panic in Detroit." That would have thrilled Rozz to no end!
So jealous that you got to see Roxy Music...one of my favorite bands of all time, and Rozz's too! And I think Rozz and Gitane's cover is exquisite as well. It gets me every time.
Gitane really has one of the most incredible voices in music. She can literally sing anything and make it entirely her own. Her cover of Gloomy Sunday is absolutely one of my favorite renditions of that beautiful standard.
I'll get the ball rolling and say that one of the most transformative performances that I ever saw was from the Butoh artist Naoyuki Oguri as part of a collective show called "New Terrain" at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (L.A.C.E) in 1992. It completely changed my life and I was fortunate enough to be able to take Oguri's workshop with all of the performers of my own performance piece, Unnatural Habitat, which I was rehearsing there at the time. Unforgettable and life-altering!
Butoh! YES. I actually found myself in a great conversation about Butoh during our dinner party in Athens on Sunday! Over 20 years ago, you bought us tickets to a Butoh performance of Sankai Juku in Paris at Theatre de la Ville . . . that was a life-changing experience. Possibly the most transformative performance I have ever seen live. I've never seen anything remotely like it before or since.
One incredible live theatre experience was seeing the opening run of August Wilson's King Hedley II, with an incredible cast including none other than Viola Davis! (Who is possibly my favorite living actress.) Talk about aesthetic arrest . . .
Viola Davis...no words. Such a phenomenal actress. And August Wilson is absolutely one of my favorite playwrights. Viola's performance with Denzel in Fences still haunts me.
Great episode guys! So thrilled to hear all about the event in such detail. Everyone did such an amazing job putting this together and celebrating Rozz’s work.
Thank you so much for everything you did to make all of this happen and for all of your support. And, of course, thank you for your interview and foreword in the book. Your readings of the poems were heartfelt and beautiful.
Yes, thank you for everything! The interview, the foreword, and also your tireless promotion of the book. I met at least three people at the book launch (all of whom purchased books by the way!) who heard about the event because of your post on Instagram. Thank you for that.
I was moved by all the performances. I mean, mine was OBVIOUSLY the best…..just kidding. In all seriousness, Del Mar takes the cake for his haunting rendition of “Saw Dust.” His is the first one I watched while cutting the video together and it’s the one I kept going back to.
Well, OBVIOUSLY, you were ALL absolutely stunning! And what I loved most was how everyone put their own spin on it and connected to the material in such a visceral and personal way. Thank you for your very heartfelt and beautiful reading of the poems. And yes, Del Mar will be blushing when he reads this but his performance of "Saw Dust" was certainly riveting. I'm just over-the-moon with all of you and the whole thing.
What an event! I don't have the words to express how amazing the reading of Rozz's poetry by artists paying tribute to the artist affected me. The emotion, the love certainly came through.
Re a noteworthy live performance--David Bowie. What a coincidence you talked about him during this podcast.
There was so much love and positive energy at the book launch . . . it really blew our minds. Everyone involved, from the artists to the audience to the bartenders, were so gracious and respectful and appreciative of Rozz's work. Weren't the videos great? And yes, seeing David Bowie live is definitely one of my concert highlights. What an amazing performer. Possibly my favorite live concert ever?
Yes, the videos blew me away. Ace, Delmar--all of them really. It was apparent that a lot of thought and work went into the videos & so professional. The live performances were also great. I am a new fan of Ron's art as well. It was a wonderful podcast.
They all just gave so much of their own take on his work. It was so personal and heartfelt. So pleased that you enjoyed it and were moved by it. And I love that you are taken by Ron's art. He's a genius and a sweetheart and an inspiration. We're both so so pleased that you liked the podcast, it was a personal one. Positive energy and love and good vibes your way! Thank you.
The videos exceeded our expectations a thousandfold. Every single person involved created a moment (or two) of perfect beauty. A genuine homage. And I love that you're a fan of Ron's art now! Such a provocative trailblazer . . . his costumes alone are just stunning. And such a brilliant and lovely and inspirational man. Hope we can attend one of his workshops or performances in the near future!
First off, thank you for your lovely comment about the event. It was definitely momentous and I'm so glad you watched it and were moved by it. The feeling in the room was palpable.
Secondly, David Bowie...I'm still beating myself up for not seeing Bowie! I had an art exposition in Paris the night he played in Seattle when we had tickets and I guess it was either Bowie or an art expo in Paris! Still, I'm jealous. Great live performance reference!
I got to be there live in 08 when the dance group jabbawockeez performed for the first time on America’s Best Dance Crew. They blew my mind. We leapt out of our seats along with the rest of the audience. Now they have their own residency in Vegas.
What’s hard to appreciate watching their older stuff is how their moves influenced hip hop choreography. So much so they’ve won lifetime achievement and living legend awards from the Hip Hop community. Their pop and flow and ridiculous synchronization into b-boy was explosive and now you see it everywhere.

Right? I mean, they just take it to another level.
Couldn't agree more! That one always gets stuck in my head too . . . especially Gitane's exquisite vocalization . . .

Del Mar's performance was everything. There was an audible *gasp* from the audience when his video finished.

Amazing! They are electrifying to watch on video, I can only imagine how incredible it was to see them move like that live!
Wow! Just watched that performance on Youtube. They move like a single being! Incredible.

So much so they’ve won lifetime achievement and living legend awards from the Hip Hop community. I’m so happy that it all came together for you in Athens . All the synchronicities and all the memories and love that was shared!!
Thank you, Cheryl! It really was a magical moment and filled me up. Still reeling from it all!
