Great show, long to dine and wine with you two again. My comedic faves are not notably obacure by modern standards, but are W.C. Fields, Lenny Bruce and Lord Buckley, and a special love for Rudy Ray Moore as i got to meet him and saw him many times over the years!
Thank you, Ace. We long to wine and dine with you again too! And thank you for the great choices - LOVE them all! And that's amazing that you saw and met Rudy Ray Moore over the years...I mean, c'mon, Dolemite is sheer genuis.
What's not to like about Rudy Ray Moore! You turned me on to RRM years ago, and "toasting, "playing the dozens" in general. Thanks, Ace! Of course, Lenny. I wonder and wish we had a new Lenny Bruce. I wonder how he would come across today?
I'm going to choose a comedian I've had the pleasure of seeing live several times . . . Sandra Bernhard! She's always hysterical, always cerebral, always absurdist, always playing with irony in the most spectacular ways . . . she's also, hands-down, one of the best storytellers I've ever seen. Sandra Bernhard always makes me laugh, always makes me think, and I swear I'm always quoting her (usually silently in my head, since most people other than my husband usually won't get the reference).
Egualmente! I nearly died when I first heard the intro after you sent it and wondered . . . could he be referring to . . . and so it was. I was a bit surprised that you chose him specifically. He influenced me, as much as Silverman.
Sandra was amazing live! Rozz and I had the amazing opportunity to hang out with her in her dressing room after the show and I have the indelible image of tiny little Rozz sitting on her lap with his head on her shoulder. She was delightful in person and hilarious live.
I LOVE ALBERT BROOKS! I first saw him in Taxi Driver and thought he was funny. Then the other night I watched again, "Mother." I don't know what it is about him, I don't want to put a point on timing as much as something about his voice, look against his incongruous remarks. I may watch this documentary this weekend.
Her music is sheer genius. If you love Bach and Beethoven *and* Ellington and Gershwin, then I guarantee you will love Florence Price. They've found a real treasure trove of her music, and in the last 2-3 years it seems there's a new release/recording every few months of "new" Price compositions that were never heard in her lifetime. Many of them can be heard on Spotify. (I'm especially fond of the symphonies, the concertos and the works for solo piano.)
Well, I like all of those composers, including Mozart. In fact, I just subscribed to Lara Downes, playing Price, on youtube! I heard four notes and fell in love with her instantly!
Thank you for introducing her. That's why you're here ;)
Well, I'll chime in by choosing someone contemporary whom I absolutely think is one of the funniest minds alive and serves up some the most unique comedy today. And that's Bill Bailey.
We've never had the pleasure of seeing him live but we adore all of his comedy specials. He's absolutely brilliant and insane.
I *almost* chose Bill Bailey. Definitely one of my favorites. And he's such a talented multi-instrumentalist! His crazy musical mashups are hilarious. This is the man who decided the U.K. needed a new national anthem in the form of "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" in the style of Portishead. One of the greatest things I've ever seen.
Call me crazy, but in my comedian list I forgot to include Gary Shandling. The Larry Sanders show was so akin to my favorite in irreverent humor, the show's concept, the peek of the reality behind the curtain of the biz- it's really like that. Died in 2016. Absolutely brilliant show on a shoestring budget. And I had a real life crush on Wally Langham, who played the role of the show's writer.
Couldn't agree more! Garry Shandling is another comedy genius. The Larry Sanders show was *waaaaaaaaay* ahead of its time. (And It's Garry Shandling's Show was great too, actually. Though the theme song occasionally gets stuck in my head for days on end.)
The "It's Garry Shandling's Show," was the predecessor, and it was equally funny, but when HBO picked up Larry Sanders, it went through some needed changes. Larry David, I think, was influenced by Shandling- it may have been the other way around? I can only watch "Curb" when I'm relaxed. Jewish humor, is the best humor, the mother of humor in my opinion, and because I was with a Jewish woman for almost 12 years, I get nervous because it reminds me of the chaos and the shpilkis that I used to get. I don't mean this in the pejorative at all, it's that I lived out some of those awkward situations and it's clever and funny, especially since it's all basically improvised.
I am so glad you said Carlin! I was hoping someone would! He's one of my all-time favorites and was one of my Dad's too. That show has closed but we still go back and watch his stand up and . . . it still stands up!
And thank you for being such a loyal supporter of our work. It means the world to us both!
I love Albert Brooks! I recently read about that documentary but haven’t seen it yet. I can’t wait. He was one of my favorite comedians, although I never saw all his stand up, I just didn’t watch much TV. But I loved his movies. I loved defending your life. I’ve seen it a couple times. And he would definitely be one of my favorite comedians and I would also say Robin Williams and George Carlin.
You'll love the documentary, it brought back so much of why Albert Brooks is so phenomenal. And seeing him with Rob Reiner was priceless. Defending Your Life, amazing film!
Yes, Robin Williams! I was also waiting for someone to say him. An inimitable genius of comedy and drama.
Loved this week's edition with Thich Nhat Hanh, Florence Price, The Book of Delights, "Impudent wine," Gribouille, Bill Reid, AND hearing the two of you again! Great program... Amazing, all. Thanks. Eileen
Thank you, Eileen! It's wonderful that you're listening and enjoying it. We were so thrilled to get to know you. Thank you so much for your support for everything we're doing, it means the world to us both!
I’m late again! Me, I love Tig Notaro. Sometimes if I’m feeling stressed or down (which has been a lot in the last week), I pull up her bit, No Moleste--it’s impossible not to laugh. So good!
Not late at all! (Last week we just recorded earlier than usual.) And we LOVE Tig Notaro! Another one of our favorites. (And she's also utterly delightful on Star Trek: Discovery!)

Excellent comedian choices, Ace! And you met Dolemite?!?! Wow. Rudy Ray Moore was one of the greats.
What's not to like about Rudy Ray Moore! You turned me on to RRM years ago, and "toasting, "playing the dozens" in general. Thanks, Ace! Of course, Lenny. I wonder and wish we had a new Lenny Bruce. I wonder how he would come across today?

She was HILARIOUS! in King of Comedy! Berhard, Bruce, Moore, LaWanda Page and in contemporary, Amy Schumer.
Omg, LaWanda! I was going to say her as well. I have some of her comedy albums on vinyl - so raunchy and so good!
Absolutely. LaWanda Page is another one of my favorites of all time! Also another incredible storyteller.
She's the Reina of Raunch.
I like her story about the woman in the crazy house . . . I cried laughing.
Oh that's a good one.
You have exquisite taste in stand-up comedy. :-)

I love this story!
I remember this story. I don't recall where I heard it, via telephone or podcast- maybe in correspondence.
Mother is sheer genius, it's true. You should watch the documentary, it was totally delightful if you're into Albert Brooks.
Crazy story about Florence Price. Incredible that her work was found, sadly after her passing.
Her music is sheer genius. If you love Bach and Beethoven *and* Ellington and Gershwin, then I guarantee you will love Florence Price. Well, thank you! You're very welcome. And we *worship* Lara Downes.
I practically tripped over the hint!

George Carlin was one of my favorites. Unfortunately that show has closed.
Also, one delight is listening to your weekly broadcast. I must read that book.
