Saluti from Rome!
We’re actually writing this at the Eric Kayser Artisan Boulangerie in the Nice Airport during our 3-hour layover back to Rome! We’ve just come from Ajaccio, Corsica, where we spent an amazing 5 days exploring the incredible “Ile de Beauté.” (Much more on Corsica on Wednesday’s Mid-Week Libation & Fridays’ Aesthetic Arrest Podcast - stay tuned!)
But for now, we’d like to leave you with some scintillating snapshots of Rome, where our adventure started last week!
Aperitivos
While our friends settled into their lavish apartment in Prati, we wandered around the corner for a midday aperitivo on the banks of the Tiber at the Antico Caffè Ruschena. A classic Aperol Spritz and Negroni seemed in order, and they arrived with a much-needed little plate of mini cheese and smoked salmon sandwiches. People-watching is always more fun with cocktails and snacks!
Once they had all taken a little siesta, we put together a modest charcuterie platter and dynamite cheese plate of aged Taleggio, Gorgonzola with pistachios and walnuts, a creamy goat cheese and some 30-month aged Pecorino (all from the amazing Mercato Trionfale, which we talked about on last week’s podcast). Divine!
The next day, after a long day of sightseeing, all we wanted was a cold beer. So we grabbed some Ceres Strong Ale and headed back to our apartment near Vatican City. Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain, is indeed the perfect goddess to represent a beer (which was delicious by the way). Ave Ceres!
The Capitoline Museums: Caravaggio & Lucrina Fetti
The Capitoline Museums were one of the highlights from our visit to Rome last year (check out our podcasts about it here & here!), and this year we knew we had to return. And it just so happened that we were there for Caravaggio’s birthday! Here’s an audio, recorded in the museum, of Ryan Wildstar’s live reaction to one of Caravaggio’s masterpieces:
