A Poem & A Song in Honor of Horus
Ryan Wildstar pays homage to Gérard de Nerval & the falcon-headed god of ancient Egypt!
Many years ago, when I was recording my album, A City of Brittle Stars, I had the pleasure of combining two of my great loves - Egyptian mythology and French poetry.
This took the form of paying homage to one of my favorite French poets, Gérard de Nerval. I decided to record his poem “Horus” from Les Chimères (The Chimeras, 1854) over music beautifully composed and played by my musical partner, Jacen Touchstone. For the liner notes of the album, I also translated the poem into English.
Below is my translation of the poem, followed by my recording of the piece in French, with the original poem in French by Nerval so you can follow along. I have also added some beautiful images of Horus from ancient Egypt, as well as a link to Robert Duncan’s brilliant translation of Les Chimères (from his book Bending the Bow).
I hope you’ll enjoy this little tribute!
